This week, China's state television devoted prime-time coverage to electric heavy trucks — and the technology milestones announced around it are remarkable. A 1,200 km long-haul test published by industry media on October 9 showed just how far electric trucks have come:
- Tesla Semi: 805 km fully loaded at 37 tonnes, with 1.2 MW charging adding 60% in 30 minutes
- DeepWay (China): up to 1,200 km maximum range
- CATL TECTRANS II battery platform: 1,000 km range on a single overnight charge
- Foton Auman Galaxy 9 PHEV: over 1,200 km combined range at just 8.9 tonnes curb weight
Meanwhile the charging backbone is expanding fast: more than 11,000 new high-power charging facilities added at Chinese highway service areas, 800 kW liquid-cooled chargers entering service, and China's national charging network now exceeding 24 million connectors.
So Should Overseas Fleets Wait for Electric?
Honest answer from the export front line: for most markets outside China, not yet — and here is why.
- Infrastructure is the bottleneck, not the truck. The 800 kW chargers and 1,000 km tractors are being deployed inside China first. Most African, Middle Eastern and Latin American markets will not have reliable megawatt-scale highway charging for several years.
- Used diesel economics remain unbeatable. A well-inspected used HOWO or Shacman 6x4 tractor costs a fraction of a new electric tractor, runs on fuel available on every corner, and can be maintained by any local workshop.
- Residual risk is shifting. Rapid battery progress means today's new electric trucks will depreciate faster — which actually strengthens the case for buying cheap, proven diesel now and evaluating electric at your next fleet cycle.
The Smart Play: Diesel Now, Electric on Your Radar
The pragmatic strategy we recommend to fleet clients: buy quality used diesel tractors for revenue service today, and treat electric as a three-to-five-year option once local charging matures. When that moment comes, Chinese electric tractors — already proven across China's 49%-penetrated domestic market — will be ready for export, and ZS Truck will be among the first to supply them.
