September 2026 China Heavy Truck Sales: 95,000 Units, Exports and Electric Trucks Carry the Market
Oct 10, 2026

China's heavy truck market delivered its September data this week, and the headline number looks modest at first glance: about 95,000 units sold in wholesale terms, up 10% from August but down 10% year-on-year. Look closer, however, and the two engines of the industry — exports and electrification — are running hotter than ever.

The Full September 2026 Picture

  • Total wholesale volume: about 95,000 units (including exports and new energy vehicles)
  • January–September cumulative: roughly 926,000 units, up 13% year-on-year — the industry remains on track for a strong full year
  • Exports: about 40,000 units in September, up around 21% year-on-year, driven by Africa, Latin America and Central Asia
  • New energy heavy trucks: about 33,000 domestic units, up 37% year-on-year, with penetration reaching 49% — nearly one in two domestic heavy trucks sold in China is now electric
  • Natural gas trucks: down about 63% year-on-year as high LNG prices erode the cost advantage over diesel

Why Domestic Sales Slipped While Exports Surged

The year-on-year decline reflects domestic freight rate pressure, a high base from last year's trade-in programme, and buyers holding back on diesel and LNG purchases amid rising fuel prices. None of this affects overseas buyers — in fact, it strengthens their position. Chinese factories are running at high utilization, and export demand is now the industry's most reliable growth engine, with full-year exports on course for roughly 450,000 units.

The Electric Shift Matters for Export Markets Too

A 49% domestic penetration rate is not just a China story. It means Chinese manufacturers are scaling battery, motor and control technology faster than anyone else, and those platforms are beginning to appear in export catalogues. For markets with rising fuel costs and growing charging infrastructure, right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive electric tractors from China are becoming a realistic option — particularly for port, mining and short-haul operations.

What Overseas Buyers Should Do Now

For diesel and used truck buyers, the key takeaway is timing: Q4 is the peak season for overseas dealer stocking, and popular configurations such as the HOWO 6x4 371HP tractor see the longest lead times between October and December. Confirm specifications and book shipping space early.
