Volvo FH Aero Electric 700 km range heavy-duty truck

Hanover, Germany — September 14, 2026 | Volvo Trucks used IAA Transportation 2026 to push electric-truck boundaries in two directions at once: range and hauling capacity. The Swedish manufacturer announced the start of series production for its new generation of heavy-duty electric trucks, led by a Volvo FH Aero Electric capable of up to 700 km on a single charge. It also unveiled an electric straight-truck combination rated for gross combination weights up to 80 tonnes.

700 km Range Enters Series Production

Volvo unveiled its new electric-truck generation in April 2026, promising greater range, flexibility and efficiency. Now, the first production models are rolling off the line at Volvo’s Tuve plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The flagship extended-range Volvo FH Aero Electric can travel up to 700 km on a single charge. The added range is made possible in part by a new e-axle design that integrates electric motors into the axle, freeing up chassis space for additional battery capacity. The truck is compatible with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), designed to reduce charging-related downtime during long-haul operations.

80 Tonnes on Electric Power

Volvo’s second major announcement addresses heavy-load electrification. The company unveiled a Volvo FH Electric straight truck designed for truck-and-trailer combinations weighing up to 80 tonnes.

  • At 64 tonnes GCW: range up to 450 km
  • At 76 tonnes GCW: range up to 420 km
  • Battery capacity: 640 kWh usable
  • Improved durability, monitoring and cold-weather insulation
  • 680 kW MCS charger: 20% to 80% in about 36 minutes
  • 360 kW CCS2 charger: 20% to 80% in about 70 minutes

The vehicle also features an eight-speed transmission developed for electric motors and hub-reduction axles for increased ground clearance and startability at high GCWs.

Multiple Technologies, Not One Solution

Despite the emphasis on batteries, Volvo stressed that electrification is not the only answer. The company continues improving diesel and gas engines while developing fuel-cell trucks and combustion engines that burn hydrogen directly. A prototype Volvo FH Aero with a hydrogen combustion engine was available for test drives in Hanover.

“Our multi-pronged approach allows fleets to select technologies based on routes, loads, available energy and economic requirements,” said Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks.

Market Significance

With battery-electric Volvo trucks having collectively travelled more than 450 million km worldwide, the production launch of a 700 km-range model shows the manufacturer is targeting a much larger share of the market. Combined with the 80-tonne heavy-haul announcement, Volvo is demonstrating that electrification is no longer limited to less-demanding urban and regional applications.
